TRAINING 5

COHORT 5

December 7-9, 2022

Valor Compass Center

Nashville, Tennessee

TRAVEL & PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS

ATTENDANCE

Training attendance for your entire Powered by Compass Team is a required part of our Compass Camp partnership. Please contact your Coach if you have any attendance concerns for this event.

LOCATION

All sessions will take place at the Valor Compass Center which is located at 4523 Nolensville Pk, Nashville, TN 37211.

ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE TIMES

Please book flights that allow you to be fully present for all sessions. Plan to arrive at the Compass Center no later than 8:45 am CT on Wednesday December 7th. To ensure you do not miss any sessions on Friday please book a return flight leaving at 5:30 pm Central time or later on Friday December 9th.

PREPARE YOUR TEAM

We know leaders will continue to face challenges this School Year- which makes the time away for connection and learning both hard to navigate and even more needed. Ask for support from your manager and teammates by planning for coverage and setting the expectation that you will be offline during sessions. While you are engaged in training at the Compass Center, all participants are directed to put personal devices such as phones and laptops away to avoid distractions and to be fully "dropped-in" and present.

MEALS

We will provide a light breakfast, coffee, snacks, and lunch on all 3 days of the training, and we will be hosting a Cohort wide social event Thursday evening. Let us know if you want some recommendations for dinner on the other nights you are here.

LODGING

When booking hotel accommodations, consider that the Compass Center is closer to Brentwood than downtown, but hotels in the Green Hills neighborhood, downtown Nashville, and the Gulch are all within a reasonable distance to Valor. If you want a more unique Airbnb experience, East Nashville is the most eclectic part of town with a wider variety of restaurants, bars, and entertainment, albeit a bit further from Valor. Airbnb tends to be approximately the same cost as a moderately priced hotel in Nashville.

REQUIRED PRE-WORK

STORIES OF IMPACT

(1 per School, ~30 minutes)

  • One of the ways we continue to cultivate Investment in Circle is to intentionally gather and share stories of how this work is impacting our community.  As a PBC team we are asking you to identify one story of impact from this School Year and prepare to share this with our Cohort 5 Community at Training.

  • An effective story of impact centers on a specific way that your community has been impacted by the roll-out of Student Circles this year, in the form of story-telling. For example, is there a specific Student who has been deeply impacted by their work in Circle? Is there a particular moment you observed in Circle that stuck with you for weeks to come? Is there a teacher who has been changed by the opportunity to connect with Students in this way? Is there a way your core culture has shifted or changed in a way you can demonstrate?

  • You may choose any format to share your story but please include a concrete artifact or evidence that can help bring the story to life. This might look like photo, video, audio, and/or direct quotes from community members.

ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOLS

(60 - 120 minutes)

During this training you will learn to facilitate three new badges that you can leverage for Faculty Circles this year and that Students will experience next year when you transition to grade level aligned Badge Work. As pre-work for this training please complete ONE of the Expansion Pack badges from the list below. For the most authentic practice in our Mini-Circles, please ensure you bring to training printed or hard copy components of the Badge that are shared in Circle.

  • 6th Grade Noble Purpose Identity Deck: Please read the entire packet, but only complete pages 8-11 to create your identity deck and bring the final version in hard copy.

  • 7th Grade Big Heart Gratitude Attitude: Please read the entire packet, but only complete pages 15-17 to create your gratitude letters and bring the final version in hard copy.

  • 8th Grade Big Heart Self-Kindness Master Plan: Please complete the entire packet and identify on page 16 which activity you’d like to complete for your work in Circle.

HIGH SCHOOL

(60 - 120 minutes)

Badge Work Expansion Pack: During this training you will learn to facilitate new badges that you can leverage for Faculty Circles this year and that Students will experience next year when you transition to grade level aligned Badge Work. As pre-work for this training please complete ONE of the High School Expansion Pack badges from the list below.

  • 9th Grade: Life Artifact 2.0 (estimated time: 1 hour)

    • The online VIA Character Strengths assessment is optional; you can self-identify 4-5 strengths from the list on your own if you choose

    • For the sake of time, you can opt to only ask for 1 person to share their "strength spotting" with you (but we think it's great to ask for 2...or more!)

    • For your Future Strengths Story, choose 1 or more of these prompts instead of the prompts in the high school badge:

      • How do you see your future self aligning with your identified strengths? How will you use your strengths in your daily work? In your personal relationships at home?

      • What is something you hope to complete or accomplish in the next 5 years? How will you use your strengths to accomplish this goal?

      • How do you want to be of service in your family and/or community in the future? How will you use your strengths to accomplish this goal?
