We are excited to finally welcome you to the Compass Center in Nashville! At this training, you will be fully immersed in learning to facilitate Faculty Circle, as well as coaching your faculty to complete their first Badge Work.
Who Should Attend?
To support our COVID safety plan and the reality of understaffed schools right now we are limiting attendance for this event to a maximum of 3 (for schools with less than 40 staff members) or 4 (for schools with 40+ staff members) total participants per school. Given that this training is primarily Faculty Circle facilitation training, the participants should include the school principal and PBC team members who will facilitate Faculty Circles this school year. Your Valor Coach can help you navigate the final attendee list that makes sense for your school context.
We will revisit attendance limits again in the Spring, and we appreciate your Powered by Compass Team’s flexibility in adjusting course from our initial plan for training. Please ensure that your PBC Team huddles to determine who will attend this training prior to registering for the event.
*The following details will also be included in your registration confirmation email.
Mandatory Pre-Work for this Event (1 hour 45 min)
1. Report your vaccination status using this confidential form. (15 min) If appropriate, you will be asked to upload a photo of your vaccination card. If you will be submitting a negative COVID test, or if you are not yet fully vaccinated, Jonathan will reach out to you with a reminder and directions for uploading one week prior to the event.
2. Faculty Badge Work (60 min for elementary/middle schools - high school partners, see note below) During this training you will internalize and learn to facilitate one of the badges from the Faculty Badge Work Starter Pack. Please complete the appropriate badge for your school.
Middle & Elementary School Partners: 1,000 Questions or If You Really Knew Me
This is a 6th grade Big Heart Badge in the Compass curriculum.
Read pages 1-6 to build initial understanding of the entire badge. You do not need to complete the tasks on these pages.
Complete pages 7-12 and prepare to share either your “If you Really Knew Me” statements or participate in the 1,000 questions exercise in Circle.
High School Partners: Cultivating Positive Emotions
This is a 10th grade Big Heart Badge
Read Section 1: Why Do Positive Emotions Matter? on pages 2-3
Section 2: What are 10 Positive Emotions? on pages 4-6. Choose 3.
Complete all of Section 3: Practice Cultivating Your Positive Emotion (Choose 1) on pages 7-9. Note: This section is spread out over the course of one week.
Complete Section 4: Use Your Positive Emotion & be prepared to present in Circle.
3. Introduction to Narrative Practices (15 min). Read & Annotate: Narrative Practices Overview
4. Mini-Circle Content (15 min). Prepare a piece of authentic Individual Work (pages 5-6 only)
Individual Work is used in our Circle model for participants to bring authentic & real time important events or needs happening in their life to the community for support or connection. Please plan to share something authentic that is either currently present in your life, or recently so.
Travel and Planning Considerations
Please plan to arrive at the Valor Compass Center at least 15 minutes before our 12:00 CT start on Wednesday. With traffic you can estimate about a 30 minute drive from the airport once you've secured a rental car or ride share.
When booking hotel accommodations, consider that the Compass Center is closer to Brentwood than downtown, but hotels in the Green Hills neighborhood, downtown Nashville, and the Gulch are all within a reasonable distance to Valor. If you want a more unique Airbnb experience, East Nashville is the most eclectic part of town with a wider variety of restaurants, bars, and entertainment. Airbnb tends to be approximately the same cost as a moderately priced hotel in Nashville.
We will provide a light breakfast, coffee, snacks, and lunch on all 3 days of the training, and we will be hosting an outdoor social event with food on Thursday. Let us know if you want some recommendations for dinner on the other nights you are here.
Please book your return flight no earlier than 4:30 CT on Friday to ensure you do not miss any sessions and can safely get to the airport in plenty of time for your flight. We expect all participants to attend the full training, from beginning to end, and the airport can take up to 30 minutes to get to on a Friday, in addition to wait time for a ride share.
Prepare to be fully present for all sessions: We know leaders are facing tremendous challenges this School Year- which makes the time away for connection and learning both hard to navigate and even more needed. Ask for support from your manager and teammates by planning for coverage and setting the norm that you will be offline during sessions. While you are engaged in training at the Compass Center, all participants are directed to put phones and laptops away to avoid distractions and to be fully dropped-in and present.
COVID Safety Plan
To minimize risk of exposure to and spread of the virus, we will be enforcing the following protocols during the training.
All participants must submit proof of full vaccination or a negative molecular (e.g., PCR) COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the event start in order to attend. You may do so by clicking here.
While indoors we will require all participants to wear masks.
The Training will take place at the Valor Compass Center. This is a separate building from our schools, dedicated to adult development and training. We will not visit school sites at this time, and use of this building is limited to those attending training.
We are limiting the capacity for this event in order to allow the physical space for as much social distancing as possible. The main training room will be set-up with three feet of social distance between each chair.
Outdoor dining space is available for those who feel more comfortable eating lunch outside.
Our (optional) Cohort Social Event will be held at an outdoor venue.
Rapid antigen tests will be available for all participants upon request.
We are here to support! If you have any questions or concerns about these safety measures, please reach out to your Valor Coach as soon as possible.
