REQUIRED PRE-WORK
STORIES OF IMPACT
(1 per School, ~30 minutes)
One of the ways we continue to cultivate Investment in Circle is to intentionally gather and share stories of how this work is positively impacting our community. An effective story of impact centers on a specific way that your community has been impacted by Student Circles this year, in the form of storytelling. For example, is there a specific student who has been deeply impacted by their work in Circle? Is there a particular moment you observed in Circle that stuck with you for weeks to come? Is there a teacher who has been changed by the opportunity to connect with students in this way? Is there a way your core culture has shifted or changed?
Please prepare ONE single slide and paste into this deck to represent one specific story of impact that can be shared in 5 minutes or less. If feasible, you can include a photo, short video, audio clip, and/or direct quotes from community members to help bring your story to life.
During our opening session you will share this story with other School Teams so please have ONE teammate prepared with the final slide (loaded on their laptop) and story to share in 5 minutes or less.
BADGE WORK
(60 - 75 minutes per person)
Please complete one of the following Badges by 1/27 and bring the hard copy final badge to our event. For the most authentic practice in our Mini-Circles, please ensure you bring to training printed or hard copy components of the Badge that are shared in Circle.
ES/MS: Self-Kindness Master Plan (8th Grade): In this badge you will explore the habit of Kindness through various activities where you will practice showing kindness to yourself through strengthening your positive self-talk. You will identify the ways that you may use negative self-talk in your life and explore strategies to counter or flip those statements. In Circle you will have a choice for how much you want to share with your Pride about your positive and negative self-talk statements. Allow for a minimum of 90 minutes to complete the badge. Please note that you have two options for sharing this badge work in Circle (see p. 16.)
HS: Life Story 7.0 (11th Grade): This badge offers an opportunity for participants to update their Life Story based on what they value, what they recognize as their character strengths, and their relationships and connections. Completing this badge will help participants answer that really vague question, “Tell Me About Yourself”. Allow for a minimum of 90 minutes to complete this badge. Note that you will need to share your updated Life Story with a person close to you prior to sharing in Circle.
TRAVEL & PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS
🕜 Arrival & Departure Times: Please book flights that allow you to be fully present for all sessions. Plan to arrive at the Compass Center no later than 8:45 am CT on Wednesday January 28th & book a return flight leaving no earlier than 5:00 pm Central time on Friday January 30th.
🏫 Location: All sessions will take place at the Valor Compass Center which is located at 4523 Nolensville Pk, Nashville, TN 37211.
⚪ Engagement & Presence: As you prepare for this event please let your colleagues know that you will not be accessible during core sessions. Compass Camp is an active training experience and requires your full attunement to maximize learning. Please note that during sessions, all participants are directed to put personal devices such as phones and laptops away to avoid distractions and to be fully "dropped-in" and present.
🏨 Lodging: When planning your travel please consider that the Compass Center is located in the South Nashville neighborhood and close to Brentwood, TN. If you are looking for specific local recommendations as you plan your trip, please review our Visitor Guide.
🍽️ Meals: We will provide breakfast, coffee, snacks/drinks, and lunch on all 3 days of the training. You will be on your own for dinner each evening, please review our Visitor Guide for recommendations.
🧥 Dress Code: We want you to feel comfortable and at ease throughout your time with us. The Compass Center is often kept on the cooler side to balance the Southern humidity, so we recommend packing a sweater or an extra layer to stay cozy indoors. On Thursday evening, we’ll head off-site for a casual social event—feel free to dress for a relaxed evening out. That said, no part of the experience will require formal or elevated attire. Come as you are, and dress in whatever helps you stay present and engaged.
🚗 Daily Travel to the Compass Center: Once in Nashville if you are relying on Uber/Lyft we recommend pre-scheduling your rides to ensure you arrive on time each day with plenty of time for breakfast!
